The food is also a significant agricultural subsidy, not just a subsidy to the poor, so farmers are also worse-off.

    https://investigatemidwest.org/2024/11/13/trump-election-farming-counties-trade-war/

GRAPHIC: Trump support grew in America’s top farming counties despite first-term trade war

Farming-dependent counties rallied behind Trump with an average of nearly 78% support.

That’s not to mention USAID being cut, which is also a farm subsidy, rural Internet subsidies being cut, and trade wars that tend to result in countertariffs on agriculture, off the top of my head.

I mean, people can use their vote as they please, but…

    EDIT:

    https://www.reuters.com/world/us/federal-funding-cuts-ripple-through-heart-trump-country-2025-03-29

    • Cuts impact small farmers in West Virginia where Trump won 70% of votes

    • Trump cut $500 million program for food banks to buy local produce

    • Federal funds on average comprise about one-third of states’ annual spending

From grants from the USDA and the Department of Commerce, to funds from the Small Business Administration, an intricate web of economic support from Washington has for decades pumped money into rural America.

Much of it has now been frozen, cut back or eliminated – including at least $1.5 billion in USDA funds for schools and food banks.

And this is during a Republican trifecta. The party will never have a freer hand on policy.

In theory, the Republican Party is considered to be the “rural party”, and I would expect Congressional Republicans — if not Trump — to be advocating for their interests, given that rural America is where their votes come from. And yet…
