It’s character assassination to point out her legally documented voter registration?
guilt by assumption due to party affiliation
Maybe the real issues is that voting Republican anytime after 2016 shows a lack of any character at all?
Like, genuinely, we’re not living in the era of William F. Buckley Jr. The vast majority of these people literally stand for nothing except winning, power, and control and they’re happy to admit it. Further, it’s not like she lives in some blue state with a handful of reasonable Republicans, she lives in Florida where among the most corrupt and worst of the worst representations of that god-awful party exist.
Nobody is assassinating these voter’s character, they’ve just shown they have none.
In some places, you really can’t assume that registered republican means votes republican. What I mean by that is there are deep red counties in Florida and other red states where most local offices run unopposed, and the only way to have any say in who holds those offices is to vote in the closed republican primary. The only way to do that is register as republican.
Some people do that to mitigate damage, and then vote straight ticket against the republicans in the general election. This can be a useful tactic even in places where the democratic party is active enough to field candidates, but not enough to have two running in a primary.
In this case there are other signs and I don’t think we’re dealing with tactical registration, but it’s good to be aware of when judging people by their voter registration without knowing a lot about the local politics.
William F Buckley was a huge racist. He gets trotted out by many as an example of a good conservative, but he was terrible POS who is responsible for the form of conservatism we have today. He was an articulate liar.
The New Yorker reviewed a recent biography of Buckley:
And yet, somehow, he was more reasonable than what we’re dealing with today.
To be clear, I don’t have any dispute with anything you’re saying (and I gave you an upvote because you’re correct), but we’re not in an era of “articulate liars.” We’re in an era of vranyo, where they know that we know that they’re lying and they simply don’t even care to try to make a good lie. These are bumbling, inarticulate liars.
I don’t think we are on different pages, but I think it’s important to show how Buckley helped create the space for MTG to emerge.
Buckley was a master of hiding his real beliefs in liberal language. By doing so, he was able to slip fascist beliefs into the public discourse. There were some who knew they were lying and called him a crypto fascist. But many did not and his arguments penetrated deeply into the populous. Do much so, that you see Democrats sincerely taking up his talking points during the decline of the great society Democrats and the ascendancy of the neo liberal Democrat.
When these policies failed to deliver to the Democratic base, the base left. Buchanan, Gingrich, and others were lingering in the shadows for years, but lack the emotional skill to vibe with them. But Trump was able to feel their hopelessness and channel it into rage. He was speaking a truth the neo liberals never were able to voice and channel.
They lifted him to the presidency and stuck with him removing any elected official who challenged him. He found the power hungry politicians and they fell into line saying anything they needed to maintain power which means saying anything that made Trump look good.
The articulate liars created the sincere rube. The sincere rube created the hopeless masses. The hopeless masses platformed the charismatic carpet bagger. The charismatic carpet bagger attracted the sycophants.
Hitler is worse than Hindenburg, but fuck Hindenburg.

Not saying this applies to Sydney Sweeney, but:

His older siblings burned a cross in front of a Jewish house. Buckley was upset he wasn’t there because seemed like “a lark”. This was in 1937.
