Does this need to be carried out to the commonly seen extreme? No, and of course some people do it for the lulz. Does that mean it’s all just ragebait? Very much also no. It’s almost entirely people being stupid, and a small number leaning into the irritating meme. Expressing frustration with that isn’t a bad thing to do, especially if you ever want it to change, even if it might feed a small handful of offsite trolls.
And it works every time when you and others get all riled up about it. Just like they want you to be. It’s called rage bait.
