Underwater has high pressure, corrosion, and no natural lighting.

When you get an air leak in space, you find the hole and patch it. When you get a leak underwater, you don’t have to worry about it at all because it takes care of things in microseconds.

And such news doesn’t seem to be hitting mainstream, or at least I’ve missed some of it. Pandemic level stuff is so 2020 and not click worthy maybe.

My mind always goes to the “what ifs”, and reading that my first thought past more spread was…what happens when a natural system of carrion breakdown loses part of its mechanism? Dead animals will still decay, but not as fast and complete without the help, and diseases can come from rotting corpses that just sit.

Wouldn’t a NATO membership be a similar protection without the movement and danger of arms? I can’t recall what restrictions are left for Ukraine to join. It will of course piss Putin off, but anything does, and his whole fear movement that NATO is trying to take Russian land ignores the very purpose behind NATO, a common defense against attacks and invasions. Which of course Putin doesn’t even agree they are doing even though they are actively within agreed borders. I mean, Putin’s crazy, he has a fixation on remaking the old Mother Russia.

Not specifically, it was the Haber-Bosch process to mass produce ammonia, enabling large scale fertilizer production that vastly changed how much yield we could get from crops and land area. The problem is that it tied us to fossil fuels to keep us fed as the population exploded. So it could be filed under his prediction, with the whole idea being what is sustainable. The argument could be made that even civilization at its basics isn’t sustainable in the very long run, as it requires a hospitable environment like the Holocene, which was a rarity in all of Earth history.

Probably because of what I referenced in an above reply. Even closed up, the milk needs to be kept cold. If they let it sit a bit while stocking, it’s still cold but something happens (maybe some chemist can chime in). 5-10 mins waiting before they go back into the cooler probably kills a few days.

It varies. Whole milk, you’re rolling 50/50. But 2% and less can last a while if you protect them from any warming, even briefly. I had milk going bad pretty early until I figured out that the door shelf is a few degrees warmer than the inside back. Always keep my milk back there and quickly pour it and return it, and I’ve had a few actually last almost a week past the date. I do always smell before I pour. Learned that lesson the hard way with some cereal once. Ew.

Climate Town had a great video on the whole expiration date thing. It started off by manufacturers to help keep stock rotated and often were cryptic and not at all consistent. It was never meant as any guarantee of anything, and are mostly estimates.

And that one reminds me of the other one from long ago where the pilot invites a kid to sit in the seat, and in messing around the kid sends the plane into an unrecoverable crash.

Clearly high speed trains are the problem here. How can one safety weave through the crossing guards anymore with trains at such a reckless haste? Plus it looks like this time the train used another train as cover to trick everyone. Sneaky. And don’t say the arms were still down and that was enough…you can’t trust them, do your own research.

Seriously, the one thing I haven’t found from any sources is if the truck was trying to respond to a call or not. Not that it really matters, still a dangerous move, but it would explain the lack of caution.

That was part of the problem. Built where it was cheaper, ignoring literal ancient markers saying not to live there because of the past. But they would have still not failed, had they been designed for the potential of being submerged. Again, they were not because that would cost more for a long range risk. It all falls into bad planning and profit, not in any way because it was a nuclear plant.

If you exclude the early phases of nuclear development, and later accidents that happened due to bad management, how dangerous is well run nuclear energy? Maybe it’s not the form of energy generation that’s the problem.

The real irony being that all Japanese reactors shut down due to the quake as designed, and the tsunami wouldn’t have been a factor had money not been saved by shortcutting backup generator protection from flooding in a FLOOD ZONE.
