Hazardous waves from strong 8.7 quake are possible on the coast of Russia, Hawaii, Alaska and some Pacific islands after earthquake struck off Kamchatka
We even had an advisory in Okinawa. Gave my family and I a scare, but we were ok.
At around 20:45 JST last night, they finally removed all of the evacuation orders where we are (and I think in the rest of the main islands, at least). Definitely this morning, we’re all down to anything from an advisory to nothing at all (per the JMA website). Trains are still not running up here in parts of Tohoku, though. Some people voluntarily remain in evac areas this morning in my prefecture. A lot of people in the on the border of Iwate and Miyagi prefectures got wiped out in the 2011 tsunami, so I imagine there is an amount of fear/PTSD there.
So far, there were a couple of minor injuries in people over the course of evacuation (probably due to panic and running or something). 4 whales were beached in Chiba prefecture which is maybe related to the quake and/or tsunami. I haven’t heard of any real domestic damage or injury this morning, but we might hear about some boats being damaged.
We still have only seen 1.3m (70cm where I live) thankfully. Looks like Hawaii got 1.7m in one area. Thanks to all for the kind words and I hope everyone outside of Japan is also safe and this is the worst we see from this event.
Why are many things happening all at once? Tsunami warnings and then a volcano eruption in russia, man i prey for everyone to be safe
It’s pretty normal for eruptions and earthquakes to happen together. They are symptoms of the same cause: plate movements.
So far, the only waves that have hit have maxed at half a meter, but they’re still warning us that more and bigger may come. I live about 3km off the eastern coast of northern Japan and we’re just barely outside of evacuation area in my part of the village.
We all wish you and your country the best of luck 🫡. I know Canada will be there to help
So far, it seems 1.3m is the max we’ve seen here in Japan. Most of my area is under evacuation order still and trains are all canceled.
I’m so glad that it wasn’t as bad as it could have been.
Now a magnitude-8.8
Red alert for economic losses. Extensive damage is probable and the disaster is likely widespread. Estimated economic losses are 0-3% GDP of Russia. Past events with this alert level have required a national or international level response.

Isn’t that the fault that triggered the first 9.0 recorded? Damn plate tectonics you scary
You’re right. 1952 Severo-Kurilsk
Almost the same spot too. 15-18m tsunami waves, three of them.
I don’t know if the depth of it was different, or since it’s a logarithmic scale it was just that much weaker, but Russia reported 10-12ft tsunami waves (which is admittedly way too much) Japan reported 2ft, and California got between 2ft and 5ft.
Probably had more to do with the direction the plates shifted rather than total energy of the shift I guess
Yeah, I imagine even a 1ft tidal wave would be enough to sweep a person or a small car away.
Apparently, there are a whole mess of magnitude scales. The 8.8 and 9.0 are given in “Mw” scale, which estimates total energy. It doesn’t differentiate between friction and the seismic wave energies.
Who else here knows where Kamchatka is because of Risk?
Got me.
The band is good too. But yes, Risk.
Literally ZERO coverage on this from CNN/MSNBC.
Found a live stream from Hawaii:
Could you pin this post and give the title an edit to clarify this isnt just Japan? This is like most of North and South America and many areas in South East Asia too that could be hit.
This seems to be huge.
24" waves in Japan so it looks like everyone else will be fine, no official all clear for many hours yet.
I’m treating Hawaii like the canary in the coalmine and watching the stream, so far it’s kind of a nothingburger, but if it accelerates, absolutely!
This is what russia threatened the UK with here
Holy crap
That’s what we call a big earthquake
