I used to haunt surplus yards as a high schooler in the 1980’s. There were a lot of pneumatic tube components to be found as the world was switching to electronic networking. Pumps, boxes of o-ring seals, tubes and junction fittings.

Running an instance is pretty trivial from a sysadmin standpoint, so I do lean towards smaller entities just running their own, to prevent monolithic censorship.

They can just disable comments so they don’t have to moderate anything. A county could run just a read-only instance that would have a community for every department that needed to do public communication. The road department could post about a bridge closure, the conservation district could promote a volunteer event, and so forth.

You may be misunderstanding the bit measure here. It’s not ten bits of information, basically a single byte. It’s ten binary yes/no decisions to equal the evaluation of 1024 distinct possibilities.

The measure comes from information theory but it is easy to confuse it with other uses of ‘bits’.

This question is a bit too broad to get the answers you may want.

Here’s what I think we need to know to give the best answers:

• What general industry are you working in?
• How ‘bleeding edge’ is the research?
• Are you really pushing the envelope with new untested ideas, or just innovating incrementally around market-tested concepts?
• Is the R&D for a totally new company or is it occurring within an established company?
• What expenses are absolutely required, including labor, capital and operational costs? Do you need just a pen and paper and someone to use them? Or do you need a multi-billion semiconductor fab?
