I think it’s also to do with how photogenic someone is. I’m the same as you, my photos/videos/voice always feel weird and awkward to me. The other day I came across this relatable story:

My mother is gorgeous. Stunning, even. She was homecoming queen in high school and has the smile of a true crime cliché (that is to say, it lights up a room). Blonde, razor-cut bangs frame her big, brown eyes – rimmed in her signature liquid liner, always – which literally twinkle when she laughs.

There is no photographic evidence of this.

I cannot make sense of it, but something happens to this dear, beautiful woman whenever a camera comes near. Her face contorts at the click of a shutter. A combination of the following features appears in every picture she’s ever taken: squeezed-shut lids. Crossed eye. Eyebrow askance. Elvis lip. Cowlick. I sometimes insist a particular picture isn’t as bad as she thinks; I’m lying. Her driver’s license photo? Horrendous. Her Facebook profile picture? A close-up of the family dog.

I take comfort in this whenever I come across a less-than-flattering image of myself. Photos do not reflect reality, I think. Just look at all the terrible pictures of Mom!

I get the general point, but for the specific example in that comic, electronic voting has been in use in Brazil since the '90s, and there’s basically no fraud connected to it from what I’ve heard/read. And they have the official results in hours, not days.

I “love” how they very carefully avoid making any apology whatsoever.

David Brin’s Existence features a rat’s brain model as the first true AGI that escapes onto the internet, and which people then worship by donating some tiny % of their CPU cycles to it :) I found Existence a great near-future sci-fi novel even ignoring the alien plotline, and just seeing his technological/societal vision for the next century or so.

I’m still sticking to Windows mostly because of Adobe programs and gaming, so I guess I’ll just have to go the usual massgrave.dev route and group-policy all the crap out of Win11 😮‍💨

There is a difference between passively allowing bad stuff to happen, and actively doing bad stuff.

I don’t see that much difference. They are half-arsed about store and community moderation to such a degree that it feels like deliberate neglect. They chose the responsibility of running a platform, so need to do the job properly. If they need to hire more staff to do it, perhaps they could afford it from their billions of USD revenue.

My most recent such games were Her Story and Return of the Obra Dinn.

During Her Story I ended up with an A5 sheet full of keyword ideas I wanted to search the recordings for.

Obra Dinn had me draw multiple iterations of a ship deck while trying to figure out who was likely to sleep in which hammock :D

For the top dog PC game store, Valve could behave much much worse.

But also much much better. They are really hands off with scummy dev practices, such as paid review farms. Sentinels of the Store covered them here. After it blew up, Steam removed some of the most obvious cases, but afaik others remain.

Steam has also been hosting numerous outright neo-Nazi groups for many years (PDF) and never really stepped up effectively against them. User reports and media attention has limited effect.

I’ve been a lifetime Windows user, and the handful of times I had to use Mac was like pulling teeth. Every UI convention is slightly different, and I remember I found the file manager odd too.

My work is 90% on Adobe software and my main game nowadays in Genshin 🙃 I checked ProtonDB for the rest of my games, and many are gold or worse. Having to mess around with command line stuff is already annoying in Windows, I don’t want to have to do more of it, which seems to be the case with all Linux versions I’ve read about.

I’ll stick to Win10 until the end of the support period, just like how I stuck to Win7 as long as I could 😬 That was still my favourite OS, loved Aero 🥺

I wish I could erase all my memories of Obra Dinn, just so I could experience it again for the first time 🥺 Also that soundtrack slaps!

I like that it has so many kinds of solo and group content that I can just do whatever I’m in the mood for that day.

Yeah, that’s what I heard from my microblogging colleagues too. They tried Mastodon during the first wave of Twitter exodus, found it too frustrating/difficult, tried Bluesky and stuck with it ever since.
