the pi’s serving me very well for now, load average at idle 0.01 and when doing stuff it hovers at around 50, temps under 40°C even under load and an extremely low noise level (not to mention the almost non-existent power draw)

docker-ify everything, my nginx, nextcloud, pihole, jellyfin, and basically everything else is a nightmare and I can’t even begin to understand how to modify the shit that 2023 me did 2023 chatgpt spat out, so having everything in some neat docker composes is gonna help immensly

also making the Pi that everything’s hosted on boot of an SSD instead of a cheap chinese SD card, but that requires money and I’m all out

Matrix is more like discord, no phone numbers, just email, and you can make big groups with different channels within. More meant for communities then something like Signal, that’s mostly for 1:1 conversation or small groups

What advantage would it give me over other services? Keeping the discord example i said above, no tracking, possibility to have end to end encryption, and open source code, along with the ability of having different instances that can communicate to each other, just like here on lemmy, so if you don’t trust anyone else you can run your own instance

It’s mostly good already, but as with many other privacy focused services it lacks a wide adoption, so most of the communities there are about privacy, Linux and that type of stuff.

The most used client, Element, is IMO very easy to use, you can directly register through there, and you get the choice of choosing between the official matrix.org instance (which on certain occasions is laggy due to the many people using it), or other instances

not discrediting you, this is just my point of view. Media being removed is in not really a problem on streaming sites since there’s usually many where you can watch the same thing, and as for point 4 streaming sites are basically the same.

I guess it’s just different usage because I don’t really like rewatching things and my family doesn’t usually watch movies/TV series.

So in the end the only thing I don’t like with how I do it is not being able to physically have the files

Nice guide! However, I’ve always wondered if all of these even make sense. Like, can’t you just stream from the internet? I understand having thing on your physical storage device is an extra degree of freedom but it’s very rare for me watching something more then once. Also while you can technically run it off a Raspberry Pi, it’s not really recommended and you would need a separate PC which just adds to the cost. Meanwhile, with a simple app like Cloudstream, you can just get whatever you want whenever you want. The only advantage I see of the *arr +media server approach is not needing to connect to a VPN.
