  • If the price for people coming on H1B visas is not hiring or eliminating a domestic job which commands a higher salary then we have a problem. As far as I’m aware H1B typically make less than domestic. It could be 7 figures and it’s still a problem because domestic might be 8 figures. The problem is that workers generate this value and a significant chunk goes towards the top when H1B gets less than domestic. In fact this effect is more significant in higher paying jobs than lower. It should cost the same or more than domestic to hire H1B and an H1B employee should be able to have the same worker rights as domestic. Then H1B doesn’t drive domestic salaries and hiring down.

  • The ability to sit next to an actively sick person on public transit and not get infected is truly incredible. N95 masks are brilliant. I’ve never been able to avoid unnecessary infection before learning how to use these things during the pandemic. I don’t think I’d ever fully stop wearing. There’s very little downside in masking up in high risk settings like that.

  • I think the only way for people to see differently is if the threatened tariffs are put in place and we see the worst inflation in the country’s history over the next two years. Then maybe we can get some actual progressives in Congress (unfortunately under the Democrat umbrella) to stem the tide of insanity.

I can see that happening. I don’t know if it’ll result in a proper progressive wave though. Or instead just more of the same. If people got so fucked by conservatives to turn away from them, they would be incentivised to vote for anything but conservatives. That lets the Democrats win with establishment candidates. I think a shift in the Democratic party is more likely in the in-between period, when things haven’t gotten too dire for people yet.
