  • As an American, I would recommend that folk reconsider travel to the US during the current administration. There are no longer checks and balances and it’s a very dangerous place at the moment. They’re removing all accountability for the border patrol and any immigration adjacent services so they can now do whatever they want. You’re at the complete mercy of the immigration service and they have full latitude to do whatever they want (legal or illegal) as the threat of repercussions have been removed. Be safe out there.

  • I mean the other option would have been to keep these staff and leverage them to drive innovative solutions with your product or possibly close open feature requests and bug submissions. I mean, these 500 people could have worked towards new initiatives to grow the business as they are keenly aware of the drop box business already and would be able to execute quickly on new initiatives. There are so many interesting places that drop box could expand into and they are instead choosing to layoff staff that could get them there.

  • My guess (complete amateur speculation) is that an insane number of people got hooked on opiates due to over prescribed pain meds. The medical industry then stopped doing that so the conveyer belt of new addicts has been turned off. I think the drop in deaths is a trailing indicator for the lower levels of new users that started as legitimate prescriptions. So now, it’s down to the people that would likely have tried opiates without being fed them by the medical industry. Just speculation though.

  • Doesn’t sound like retaliation to me, it sounds like their scheduled web crawlers are finding that content they used to index is now no longer viewable and this removed from search results. Pretty standard. My guess is that there were 400 million URLs listed and as the crawler uncovers that they are no longer available, that number will keep dropping to reflect only content publicly viewable. If only 500 URLs are now publicly viewable (without logins) then that’s what they will index. Google isn’t a search engine for private companies (unless you pay for the service) they are a public search engine so they make an effort to ensure that only public information is indexed. Some folk game the system (like the old expertsexchange.com) but sooner or later google drops the hammer.
