52·9 hours agoThey could, however…
Mastodon is made of lots of instances, nobody wants to be the instance with ICE on it. If they make their own instance or the government makes their own, they can be defederated by whatever instances wish to.
That’s the difference, you can kick Ice out of your federated servers. You can’t do that with bsky.

World News@lemmy.world•US official says Greenland action could come within 'weeks or months'English
3·3 days agoThey very much did not let Germany have Poland. That is generally considered to be the first day of the first second world war.
They let Germany have Czechoslovakia, and Chamberlain only really did that because he knew that if he didn’t, Britain wouldn’t have time to prepare.

World News@lemmy.world•US official says Greenland action could come within 'weeks or months'English
3·3 days agoUkraine is standing because of NATO support. If NATO support is stretched or moved elsewhere (like an actual NATO territory), then Russia could just go “fuck it”, leave a token force down there and go for the Baltics.

World News@lemmy.world•US official says Greenland action could come within 'weeks or months'English
2·3 days agoNah I’m betting NATO does jack all and continues to be subservient to the USA.
I don’t think that will be the case. Consider:
Trump has demanded another NATO territory (Canada) or perhaps if he doesn’t think he could get away with that he could start to demand Iceland. With Trump, it looks like it will be the case of “give a mouse a cookie”.
And rNATO has made it clear that they do not want America taking Greenland, it’s one of the things they are actually standing up to America on. So the question remains: Appeasement to buy time (The Chamberlain Strategy) or send in the Troops to fight the yanks.

World News@lemmy.world•US official says Greenland action could come within 'weeks or months'English
7·3 days agoGoing to reiterate this: The US taking Greenland is how WW3 starts.
Either NATO bites it’s tongue and does a Chamberlain to try prepare for Trump invading Canada/Iceland or they trigger A5 and we’re at war. Russia will take advantage of this and Europe gets spit roasted.
Good luck, everyone.

36·6 days agoSo let me get this straight. Microsoft is taking your local files, without their consent, onto their platform where they can delete them for “terms of use” violations, alongside tracking what you do on your own computer.
Sounds like they don’t want you to use your computer in a way they don’t want you to.

World News@lemmy.world•Ban social media for under-16s, top teaching union urges UK governmentEnglish
31·6 days agoThere’s too many articles appearing in papers here in the UK praising the social media ban in Australia but absolutely none giving any opposing view. It’s genuinely concerning. The establishment here seems hell bent on copying Australia ignoring the absolute disaster that was the online safety act or that teenagers can and will find ways to circumvent this or the fact that teenagers use social media to socialise because guess what, we’ve made it even harder for them to socialise IRL.

4·7 days agoThe thing is though… is it actually CSM according to the law if there is no real child involved along the way?
Legally, yes. The law in the UK also includes images of children that are drawn or computer generated.

45·7 days agoI mean Grok is literally being used to make CSAM so it should not only be taken down but the law should get involved in any reasonable country.

Russia’s already had this plan in the works for years. They call it “Sovereign internet”.
