only way I see smaller phones make a comeback is if we change our habits or if a new technology comes along

Same. I stopped using amazon a few years back and I buy much less since
Lemmy was created by a tankie, many of whose opinions I abhor.
As long as it’s FOSS and doesn’t inherently promote their beliefs, I will use the software.
I agree it’s not great and I’d prefer if it weren’t made by imbeciles
Airvpn, or Azirevpn if you’re ok with few servers
Of those I’ve only used Azire, and it worked well. I’ve seen Airvpn recommended often though
I think I remember him endorsing signal years ago which gave it at big boost at the time

most likely yes.
My point is, if youtube customizes the feeds based on the IPs, then the youtube accounts used are not really “fresh” but there’s already some data entered into the profiles upon their creation.
fresh YouTube account
change their location to a random city in the US
yeah but you’re still bound to IP addresses. I was under the impression Youtube used those for their profiling
I still use yt-dlp to download because I don’t understand Freetube’s options. It’s either only audio or video
Also if you’re on Linux and you get a white screen during playback (has been an issue since 0.22) this fix works for me: freetube --enable-features=''

I loved xprivacy_lua
You could hide almost everything.
No app knew the other apps I used.
No app had clipboard access. when I needed to paste something I used Xposed Edge.
You could spoof a lot of info, GPS coordinates, IMEI …
The list goes on.
support stopped. I should check if there’s a fork.
edit: AOSP permissions have improved and I now use almost exclusively FOSS apps, so I’m not worried, but I still miss the app.
edit2: there’s a fork: https://xdaforums.com/t/xpl-ex-xprivacylua-ex-android-privacy-manager-hooking-manager-extended.4652573/
I don’t know. more than 60% of Internet traffic comes from mobile devices, and it keeps increasing
