  • but the reality is that the vast majority of people don’t agree with many of the views that are overrepresented on left-wing social media platforms like Lemmy

Is this true? Or is this just “people you know” and what the media you consume tells you?

If it is true then adding in the sources of where you got this information would really help your argument. Hell you may actually get more people to agree with you if you have solid evidence of what you said.

If this is just what “feels” right to you or if this is just something that other people told you is right then maybe look into that and see if reality lines up with what you are feeling and hearing.

  • so far I haven’t seen any credible systemic solutions

There are many credible systemic solutions to this problem but over the past 40+ years those solutions have been watered down and killed off.

    Things like:

    • High tax rate on the wealthy and a well funded IRS to enforce those laws
    • Strong regulations and well funded departments to enforce those regulations
    • Better education for the population at large and enough funding to give all members of the country free access to it
    • Strong labor unions and an well funded FTC to help protect them
    • A strong and FAIR justice system and the funding to keep it fair

    I’m sure there are others

  • I’m still pissed we as citizenry didn’t stand up and demand what we deserve

This will only happen if there is someone that the progressive democrats can get behind. Someone like Bernie but younger and more angry. Someone that will call out the bullshit and do it in a way that will get the attention of the big media corporations. I hate to say it but a progressive trump, but smarter (which shouldn’t be difficult) and genuinely out to better the lives of the American citizens. And I genuinely hope that this unicorn exists.

  • It was said below but I really think that there needs to be more people that are willing to run for office with a more progressive message.

I know it’s not as sexy as revolution or CEO-cide but it really is a better way to make changes without fucking the country up completely.

So how the fuck do you run for office ? I don’t know but there are resources that can help. If you don’t want to run that’s fair but as you mentioned the time to just sit around and bitch online in an echo chamber is done. Progressives are going to have to find a way to make their voices heard and in a way that isn’t talking down to people.

Note: I get the anger and the desire to want to scare the fuck out of the ruling class. But murder isn’t the only thing that the ruling class is scared of, they also don’t want people to vote for their own self-interest. They don’t want the people to demand billionaires pay more in taxes. And a significant group of progressive politicians would scare the shit out of the established ruling class.

  • I agree with all of this and I think many people on Lemmy do as well. My concern is: Will the population that is excited to vote for candidates that are willing to push these changes through have the staying power?

These are huge changes to a system that has been manipulated to benefit a small group of well connected, very powerful, very wealthy people. It’s not something that can change in one or even two presidential terms. These are changes that will take many election cycles to complete. These, and other big changes, need sustained focus.

Not saying it can’t be done - it can. The republican party has proven that. Over the course of 40+ years they have reshaped America to fit their ideals. But it took 40 years. One part of how they did it was/is by keeping the pressure on their voting base even during non-election years through FOX news, rush limbaugh, alex jones, and other pieces of shit. So when it was time to vote their base was already “educated” on why they had to vote for the republican candidate. It made/makes it easy for the republican candidate to step in and just say the right words and phrases to the voting population and they were guaranteed a certain % of the vote.

So if the left wants to re-shape how America looks and how it treats it’s population then they have to be willing to play the long game.
