The material wealth is cool and all, but theres a shame and guilt that comes with being complicit in certain atrocities as well as the denial of material wealth to the citizens of many of the countries which we economically colonize.
And for an increasing number of people, the material wealth part is fading. Then there’s the illusion of democratic participation to which more people are beginning to become cognizant of. Oh boy.

Damn good point! As a counter, corporate leadership is often surrounded by yes men and insulated from the masses. The meta verse and apples AR flop cost them a lot of money as a result. (Not sure if fb totally gave up on meta tbh)

I’ve been hopeful that we’re seeing the start of a new age of enlightenment like the one that preceded the French revolution. The more corruption settles in, the less effective voting becomes. This is why the citizenry has civic duties beyond voting.
Incoming graduates saw an entire generation go to college at the highest rates ever just to find a job market that left a record number of them with debt still on their name more than a decade later.
What were once institutions devoted to academia, have become corporate training camps ran by a board that runs the institution with a corporate mentality, and they enrich themselves commesurately.

To add to this, there’s been evidence that as an individual accrues more wealth, their empathy response lessens over time.
My arm chair psychologist hypothesis is that: as the individual sees their quality of life increase, they look at other human beings in deplorable conditions, and their empathy response atrophies in order to avoid cognitive dissonance.
There’s a concept in the study of wealthy individuals which goes over their desire to hide impoverishment from their view.
