Federal immigration authorities allowed a suspect in a $100m jewelry heist believed to be the largest in US history to deport himself to South America in December, a move that stunned and upset prosecutors who were planning to try the case and send him to prison.

Jeson Nelon Presilla Flores was one of seven people charged last year with stalking an armored truck to a rural freeway rest stop north of Los Angeles and stealing millions worth of diamonds, emeralds, gold, rubies and designer watches in 2022.

Flores faced up to 15 years in federal prison if convicted on charges of conspiracy to commit theft from interstate and foreign shipment and theft from interstate and foreign shipment. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement deported Flores in late December after he requested voluntary departure, prosecutors said in court filings.

ICE did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Funny because I thought insurance fraud as soon as I saw “jewel theif”, but this takes it to a whole new level. Like the audacity of the company(s) just outright saying that they’ve been underdeclaring the value to reduce insurance costs while suing to get the full amount anyways. Their lawsuit itself is an admission of insurance fraud, and possibly also the thing that makes it insurance fraud (since if they just insured it for a lower amount and accepted that payout, I don’t think there would have been an issue, but suing here implies that they did want the full amount and were deliberately underdeclaring the value so that they wouldn’t be charged the premium associated with the actual value.

    Edit: ) (sorry)

Everyone in this story is just so brazen about their shitty actions. Like the other comment said, they are all getting the frustration and dissatisfaction they deserve. Except the actual guy that partook of the actual physical theft that probably still got a cut of the take, a free ride almost home, and possibly that stupid self-deportation bonus check the government was offering as an additional parting gift.
