World News@lemmy.world•Ex-KGB official says 2 countries have copies of compromising Trump videoEnglish
3·17 days agoSysadmin of a flash drive in some diplomat’s drawer?! I’ll take your money to be your sysadmin then.
Well if I’m left with no option but to go to the counter at the post office it’s precisely because I have no idea how to do what I want with online resources.
E.g. post a flat cardboard package containing art that I made myself to a foreign country. The envelope sizes they sell at USPS stores don’t match the rates they post on their website. Often, the clerk can help a little bit with filling the customs form. The website says that you need a license to export art to foreign countries, the clerk doesn’t.
Stop blaming other people, start blaming the system: we need more clerks, better payed and better trained clerks.

So what are we gonna do? Accept the fait accompli? Yeah, with that attitude, nothing is gonna change for sure.
Well, I’m not AI, but can you trust my word?

Technology@lemmy.world•I spent a year on Linux and forgot to miss WindowsEnglish
2·1 month agoI just tried it after probably 5 years and it’s much better than what it used to be. The workflow is close to what I’m used to in NX, so far at least.

Thanks for having me check my opinion haha.

322·1 month agoWaiting patiently for commercial software to be ported to Linux:
- creative suites, I think Canva is working on Affinity for Linux but they want to release their iPad version first. Wine is working right now but there are a few things I’m getting tired of (navigating folders and trying to print). I know, Gimp, Inkscape and Krita.
- 3D modeling software for engineers, like solidworks or NX. I’m trying Blender add-ons for CAD but it’s not as capable. Don’t you dare suggest FreeCAD.
- Music production software, esp. Ableton.

9·1 month agoY’all are allowed to hot glue a Bluetooth keyboard to the back of your phone you know.
Jokes aside, I wonder why there aren’t more protective cases with a built in sliding keyboard for phones. Would be cool.
The minimal phone looks like a brick and I understand why the e-ink is a choice that forces you to not use your phone as much but I’m not ready.

Technology@lemmy.world•What if the Internet Goes Down? - 15 Jan, 7PM CETEnglish
2·1 month agoI think Ham radio means hobby and amateur radio, I.e. not professional. Radio is a type of radiation at very long wavelength. From the wiki:
long waves can diffractaround obstacles like mountains and follow the contour of the Earth (ground waves), shorter waves can reflect off the ionosphere and return to Earth beyond the horizon (skywaves), while much shorter wavelengths bend or diffract very little and travel on a line of sight, so their propagation distances are limited to the visual horizon.
Others have explained mesh pretty well.

3·1 month agoJust installed two Bluetooth mesh messaging apps on my phone, just in case. Is there one y’all recommend? Are BIT and Berkanan ok?
I already have too many hobbies, not going to get into amateur radio. I guess I’ll go buy a battery powered radio receiver when I get a chance, or one with a crank.
