4·21 days agoMy lil neato bot from 2017/2018ish makes a perimeter map around my place each time it deploys, then makes back and forth sweeps. It’s got a built in weekly timer by the quarter hour to schedule sweeps. It beeps at me when its bin is full. Why do robot vacuums need the internet?

News@lemmy.world•Trump backer Timothy Mellon identified as donor of $130m for US troop pay during government shutdown
4·1 month agoAs far as I understand, all the money/asset value that goes into funding an organization is owed back to the investors, whether it’s as services bck to taxpayers, or dividends back to stock investors. Any start to an organization involves people/ other organizations seeding it with money
Taking on a loan gives you both money (pretty liquid assets) and debt (liabilities). If you just use that money to pay back the debt, you’re back to no liquidity - no leverage to do the things that cost money to get kickstarted or keep maintaining.
So the idea is that, if an organization uses too much in funds/all the assets to pay back the debt, they may not have enough left over to maintain/grow operations.
Source: I’m taking accounting, am struggling, and hate how evrything seems absolutely bonkers at first. But also, it all makes sense. Because real accounting accounts for goddamn evrything.

Unrelated: sometimes I’ve had confusing chats over fb marketplace trying to gauge the other person’s tone/sanity, but found their texts were just off because they let voice-transcription take the wheel.

Technology@lemmy.world•Steam payment headaches grow as PayPal is no longer usable for much of the world: Valve hopes to bring it back in the future, 'but the timeline is uncertain'English

Someone breaks down why it’d be a monumental task for Valve/Itch to vertically integrate the whole payment processing thing into their business. The essay is highly readable.
The only thing I had to look up was
Escrow: a financial arrangement w/ a third party who holds/manages funds on behalf of two parties in a transactionMy takeaway was that Valve/itch/GOG would still be beholden to the banks who track porn as high risk for fraudulent transactions.
So what can we do about it? ~asking in earnest, btw. I buy porn and toys like a regular ass person, too~

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Wafrn: a tumblr clone that federates with fedi and now also has opt in native blueskyEnglish
7·5 months agoFor me, Tumblr was an online culture different from the ADHD of other journaling/blogging platforms like Instagram or Twitter. You could find conversations in tags, gifs didn’t lag my browser to hell, fan content was proliferous there, webpages could be personalized to the lengths you might’ve gone to in MySpace. It was the place to find fandoms and fandom content, even for the most obscure series. There were no ads. And I felt like gifs/texts of porn and kinks were made more accessible when searched for by tags.
There was no algorithm - discovery of new blogs was just subscribing to tags & maybe following who your followed-people followed, the way the fediverse kinda is.
I felt like the presentation was good to relish each post of content with less distraction, and the pagination + scroll browsing was just enough to keep me addicted.
Someone correct me if I’m remembering it wrong.
RIP 2011 Tumblr

1·5 months agoIs registration on the wafrn website backlogged? I submitted a registration bout 12 hours ago, and the registration page said to wait a few hours for review. Got nothin in my email just yet. Not that I’m antsy, and there’s no rush; just hoping to know when I should follow up to log in :u
I didn’t get any email confirmation about my submitted registration, I realize. I refrained to keep from spamming, but… Should I actually submit another? :x
Edit: think I saw the fdroid app & submitted my registration form there, mentioning in case it’s relevantThank you for this! I’m not sure how I would’ve found out about Wafrn otherwise, lol
Seems like a parallel between this and how incels learn to treat other people
