I see way too many people just squirting hand sanitizer on themselves instead of actually washing their hands. Which, does NOT kill norovirus.

Use soap and water and scrub your filthy hands. It’s the most basic hygiene.

This is a good callout, and it is true that most hand sanitizers are not effective against norovirus.

However, at the risk of sounding like an advertiser which is not my intent, there are some higher grade sanitizers out there that do kill norovirus. One is called “Prime Defense” and was originally developed for cruise ships and restaurants where norovirus outbreaks are a major concern. Companies are not allowed to advertise kill of specific pathogens like norovirus for products regulated by the FDA, hence why it is not advertised as killing norovirus (hand sanitizer is an over-the-counter drug regulated by FDA).

Washing your hands properly with soap and water is still an effective way to reduce risk of norovirus.

Wash your hands, and get back into the COVID habit of using your shirttail to touch public surfaces like opening doors, wash your produce, cook shellfish thoroughly, clean and disinfect surfaces, wash laundry in hot water, and stay home if you get it. Don’t touch public things and then put your fingers in your mouth.

If I could have any super power, it would be the ability to not touch my face or personal items after touching public surfaces

stay home if you get it

I was on a back country work trip about ten years ago, and everyone except one other person and myself got Norovirus. They were having profuse diarrhea and vomiting at the same time, while we all had to hike several miles to a vehicle. I can’t see how anyone could leave home 🤢

About 20 years ago I got hit with a norovirus. Now I rarely get the flu … like once every 10 years or so, and it’s usually done in a few days.

That bout of norovirus kicked my ass for 2 full weeks. I couldn’t even attend university classes I was so wiped.

Be safe out there, and wash your hands often.
